Working Principle

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology is widely used to generate high-purity
oxygen. Here’s how it works:
1. Adsorption Process: PSA systems use a molecular sieve, typically zeolite, in a
pressurized tank. When air (which contains about 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen) is
forced into the tank, the zeolite adsorbs nitrogen more readily than oxygen due to its
molecular properties, allowing only oxygen to pass through.
2. Separation: As the pressurized air flows through, nitrogen molecules are captured
in the zeolite, while oxygen molecules pass through to a storage tank for collection.
This process separates oxygen from other gases.
3. Desorption (Regeneration): When the zeolite becomes saturated with nitrogen, the
pressure in the tank is reduced. This causes the zeolite to release the trapped
nitrogen, which is then expelled as waste.
4. Cyclic Operation: PSA systems operate in cycles, alternating between adsorption
(capturing nitrogen) and desorption (releasing nitrogen). Two or more tanks are
often used to maintain continuous oxygen production, with one tank in the
adsorption phase while the other regenerates.

Through this efficient, cyclic process, PSA technology produces a steady supply of oxygen,typically with purities of 90-95%, suitable for medical, industrial, and environmental applications.
